We're very lucky.
Jack is the sort of child
we all assume we'll have
when we decide to have children,
and the sort of child
less experienced parents
congratulate themselves for.

Jack is walking!!!

The "Boy on a Mission" has reached his goal!

On Saturday evening, we had a small dinner party. After dinner we retired to the parlour to chat over cheese cake and coffee. Since the parlour is also Jack's play room, he, of course, joined us.

We were chatting when I happened to notice that Jack was standing in front of me, not holding on to anything. I was startled, since he doesn't usually let go of things ... but he was standing very very still with a very mischievious grin. As I watched, he took three or four steps toward me. Then he stopped, and turned using a nearby chair to turn around, and then walked five or six steps to Dad!

I was totally amazed and thrilled! There is no feeling quite like that of watching your child take his first steps. It's a little difefrent with each baby, but it's always exhilarating!

Now, 3 step, six steps don't sound like much -- and it wasn't the distance he crossed that got me attention, it was the new confidence. He was actually walking, rather than hurtling toward the next object he could support himself on!

He didn't try it again that evening -- perhaps because the friends who were there at the time seemed nmot to notice his triumph, perhaps simply because it was close to bedtime.

All day Sunday, however, Jack practiced and practiced. Usually he wanted to hold a finger, but peridically he would let go of the supporting finger and walk several steps on his own. By evening, jack was walking on his own almost anywhere he wated to go, though turning is still a challenge.

He is also now able to wak up the stairs!

Our boy is on his way! Hurrah!
