We're very lucky.
Jack is the sort of child
we all assume we'll have
when we decide to have children,
and the sort of child
less experienced parents
congratulate themselves for.

Lovey the Bear

Jack's first shoes!

As the cold weather approaches, Jack is getting his first pair of shoes!

I'm so excited! They're just adorable -- and the timing is perfect, because he has recently taken an interest in shoes and has been trying on Mamma's shoes and Dad's shoes. And they're sure to be comfortable, because they're butter soft leather! (I'm also told that even the most determined child finds them exrtemely difficult to remove -- and that will be important when the weather gets colder -- it was a struggle to keep Jack's feet covered last winter!

Lovey the Bear

A few weeks ago, I was in a craft store with Jack. We were there to buy scrapbooking supplies, but Jack spotted a soft little almond coloured bear. He pointed and said his trademarked "Aaaawww" (usually reserved for babies). So, I picked it up and let him hold it. He hugged it and repeated his "Awww". And he didn't want to put it down when it was time to leave. Well, OK, it was $1.50...why not.

So, we bough the bear. It became a favorite toy in the sense that whenever he spotted it, he wanted it, and always he hugged it and said "awww". Very sweet.

Nonetheless, days could go by that if he never saw the bear, he never thought of it.

Then, a few weeks ago, Jack started to actively seek out his bear. It came with him to bed, it came with him to the table...and it wasn't usually very far away when he was playing.

(While he didn't feel well recently, Jack rarely put Bear down at all -- that first came to my attention when we went out at 2am for a long ride in the car. As I picked him up from the bed, he grabbed Bear. He held on to it all through his diaper change, while getting dressed, and all the way down to the car. When I stopped a half hour later to run into a 24-hour grocery, Jacj still had Bear clutched to his chest! He held on to Bear throiugh the entire time in the grocery store, and still had him, clutched tight, but entirely unremarked upon, as we left the store and got back in the car. Hours later, when Jack was finally asleep, and I got him out of the car to go to bed -- my sleeping baby was still clutching his Bear in his sleep.

Yep. Jack has a lovey.

A few days later, Jack decided that Bear needed a diaper. He refused to allow me to change his diaper until I gave one to Bear, so I fashioned a simple but elegant diaper from one of his cotton baby wipes and a spare snappi. Content, Jack admired Bear's new attire, while cooperating fully with his own diaper change.

Since Jack has felt better, Bear has become a somewhat less constant companion -- but he is still never terribly far away. (Although he doesn't follow us in the car anymore - -which makes me happier. The loss of a lovey can be extremely traumatic, and the probability is immensely increased once lovey leaves the house.)

I have taken a photo, but of course I don't have it ready to put online just yet. Check back in a few days and get a look at "Lovey the Bear".
