We're very lucky.
Jack is the sort of child
we all assume we'll have
when we decide to have children,
and the sort of child
less experienced parents
congratulate themselves for.

Lilypie 4th Birthday Ticker

As I've mentioned before, Jack is a real communicator.

It's been amazing to me how fast he's learned to communicate very specifically. Already, at 9 months, he knows how to nod "yes" and shake his head "no" -- at the moment, you still have to be paying attention to realize what he's doing (nods go through the shoulders and head shaking is primarily done with the eyes...) but it's always accurate to the context.

He is also getting far better at making choices. He always chooses his own pajamas at night -- and gets frankly irritable if he doesn't get to and is extremely cooperative if he does. He also gives us the most blissful smile of contentment when we finally "get it"...that's a reward all in itself.

He has also developed an "I want that" for food very specifically -- and it's dramatic! He uses it to refer to food he sees, food he smells, and food in general if he's hungry and there isn't any food in sight. The most recent display was his way of informing that he *really* likes blueberry yogurt! He made the sign repeatedly and enthusiastically as I fed him ... but Dad had to act as translator for us. I knew he was telling me something important -- but since baby meals are usually Dad's province (Mamma shares her dinner and takes care of liquid meals) he has seen that sign a lot more often than I have.

It's so much fun raising a communicator. It's fascinating to see how complete his thoughts are so long before he'll be talking!
