We're very lucky.
Jack is the sort of child
we all assume we'll have
when we decide to have children,
and the sort of child
less experienced parents
congratulate themselves for.

Sick again? Already?

Jack's current favorite!

Mama Mama/Papa Papa by Jean Marzollo

It seems like Jack just recovered from his Coxsackie virus -- or whatever that was, but he seems to have come down with another cold. Poor baby.

Fortunately, it's not a serious cold -- mainly a runny nose, more tired than usual, and a mild fever. Still, it was bad enough that I had to rub his chest with Vicks-Vapo-Rub so he could breathe freely enough to sleep, which he didn't appreciate at all! (It got a resounding "Yuchhh" from His Nibs.)

We shouldn't have any more teething problems for a while -- all 8 baby incisors are in, as are all four 12-month molars. Now we should be safe until it's times for the 2 year molars.

Oh wait...he's 16 months, almost a year and a half old! Oh no! Not much respite, but we'll take what we can get!

I keep thinking that Jack is really good at communicating -- and then he makes another leap forward! He did that the day before he got sick. Suddenly his words are a lot clearer and his babbling has changed character. I could swear that there are actual words and content in there, if I could just listen correctly!

(There probably aren't, but his cadence and the phonemes he's using are now decidely English and he rarely uses a phoneme that sounds distinctly like some other language these days.)

He's still pressing the relatively few words he has into innovative service ...for example "hot" means "hot", "cold", "uncomfortable", and "hard". But some of our conversations feel decidely "sophisticated" to me these days. And I am getting the feel for how he will sound as a boy -- it fun, awe-inspiring, and kind of sad. My wee baby is growing so fast!

We finally got around to taking the camera on a walk, so as soon as Mamma gets a chance to sit down at the computer and get them off the camera into the aethers, we'll post them here. About then, there will also be a new batch of photos in Jack's electronic photo album. Just so you know...

Chaotic homes hamper child development. Poor Jack -- he's doomed!

Kids with siblings have better social skills. I do wish they were more informative about *why* that is -- having another child or two isn't always an option, but the rest of us could probably make changes that would reduce our children's "handicap"
