Balloons! The week before last, we took Jack to the Hot Air Balloon festival in Howell, Michigan. http://www.michiganchallenge.com/ It was part hot air balloon race, part couty fair. Knowing that it could easily be an exhausting adventure for a little guy, and knowing that we wanted to be there for the "glow" at dusk, we decided to go late in the afternoon. That was a good move -- we had a wonderful time! And the timing was perfect, Jack didn't start to get restless until we started to head for the car! The event did remind me, though, that although Jack is getting heavy, and it's hard to carry him for more than two or three hours anymore, the sling is still a wonderful thing to have. We watched as parents struggled through the thronging crowds with strollers, while they carried their child, or pulled wagons over people's feet and we were so glad that Jack was right there where he belonged! And it was no harder to get through the crowds than it would have been anyway. Here's a photo of Jack and I during the glow -- it was the end of a long evening, so it's not very flattering, but the balloons look great! You can see the sugar from the elephant ears (fried bread dough in some areas of the country -- a carnival favorite all over the US) all over the sling...Jack has proclaimed them wonderful and looks forward to the next time we go to a carnival so he can have another!
