We're very lucky. |

Jamin JackWe visited friends tonight for a dumb supper. It is Mistis and my custom to give small gifts at Samhain rather than engage in the god-awful commercialised crap-fest of Halloween. Were funny like that. Anyway, we gave small musical instruments to the goat rodeo (Gotta love Nancys sense of humor). During the course of the ensuing cacophony, one of the children began making some significant music with a harmonica. It wasnt the sort of thing that would have inspired Mozart, but it was clearly a tune. Jack watched this with amazement and a certain amount of awe. He tapped Alex (the child with the harmonica) on the shoulder, and nodded his head in approval, snapping his fingers with his free hand, as is his custom whenever he hears cool music. It was then that he did something quite astonishing. There was a rattle (that belonged to a baby) sitting within arms reach. Jack grabbed the rattle and started shaking out a beat, all the time looking over at Alex to see if they couldnt get into a groove together. It made quite a tableau to behold a tiny tot in diapers trying to set down a tune with a 6 or 7 year old. Too bad I missed it with the camera. Its the sort of thing that cannot be re-created easily either without looking fake or cheesy. Jack seems to find music so profoundly entertaining that many of the subtle details of live performance appear to remain with him from the last concert we attended. (Fruit, as a band, are seasoned performers who slide effortlessly into their music.) He was clearly trying to get Alexs attention to see if they couldnt make the music together. Alex, quite typically, had no idea what Jack was trying to do. Another small indication that we have a budding musician in our midst. If he remains interested in Jazz, he is unlikely to be particularly wealthy, but hell have a whole lot of fun. Take Care Rod
