We're very lucky.
Jack is the sort of child
we all assume we'll have
when we decide to have children,
and the sort of child
less experienced parents
congratulate themselves for.

Lilypie 4th Birthday Ticker

Jack recently had his first case of the flu. Actually, other than one cold, it was his first illness -- we've been very lucky to have such a healthy little boy!

Anyway, he went through several days of wafting in and out of consciousness with a very high fever -- it was so scary that we eventually took him to the emergency room, where they told us it was the flu and that they no longer want to see kids who's temperature is under 104F (40C). (Wow! That seems very, very high!!)

Anyway, he gradually got better over the course of a week -- of course. But as he did, we saw the most amazing transformation. Our little *baby* Jack had been swapped for a very tiny *boy*!

He crawls, he communicates, and he even helps with chores.

Well, sort of.

Jack has decided that he is only happy if he "helps" with whatever we're doing. That means he hands me the laundry to sort, he stands and bangs flatware on the door of the dishwasher when we load and unload that, he flops a damp cloth all over the place while I mop counters and clean the kitchen with him in his sling, he sits at my feet and plays with a diaper when I stand and fold diapers, and other assorted helpfulness. I have to say, it's been a long time since chores were this much fun!

*This* is why we have babies!
