We're very lucky.
Jack is the sort of child
we all assume we'll have
when we decide to have children,
and the sort of child
less experienced parents
congratulate themselves for.

Lilypie 4th Birthday Ticker

Words, Words, Words

When Rod told the pediatrician that Jack was using about 20 words, it got me thinking. That seemed about right -- but we had never actually written them down, so I wasn't sure how many words Jack actually uses.

Last night, I spent several hours writing down Jack's vocabulary.

It all started when he headed toward Minerva, saying cat . He started pat her, saying gentle , and then when she ran away (he has mastered the word, but isn't so good with the concept of "gentle") he said oh, dear! .

Hey! Three words right there!

The final tally was about 32 words. More, if we include signs or if we include words that he parrots well and regularly but doesn't say unprompted yet -- but I decided to stick with words he uses on his own consistently.

I have no idea what "normal" is -- but 32 words at 14 months seems pretty cool to me! (Unbiased? I never promised you unbiased!)
